How to Start Hiking!

I'm just going to say it, hiking is intimidating. But when you think about hiking are you considering a 30-mile ruck across a mountainside? Or a leisurely walk across the local hills or green lands? A lot of it comes down to perception & like any skill it requires practice. So there is nothing wrong with starting small and working your way up! Throughout this blog, we're going to share some tips & tricks for navigating your hiking adventure!

Start Small!

You need to consider your fitness & safety. There are plenty of websites that break down local trails. So be sure to research your surrounding trails & plan your journeys.

Don't Blow the Bank on kit!

Hiking kit can cost the earth & honestly, you're unlikely to feel the benefit of those €364 boots when you are only hiking 10 miles a month. A solid rucksack, boots & suitable clothes will do! Backpack wise you should choose one that's comfortable & only holds as much as you need. For instance, the OLPRO 32L Daypack will hold more than enough for a short hike.

Plan Your Route & Stick to it!

It's no good doing a 10-mile hike if you end up 10 miles away from your transport home! So, research your route & any potential hazards. One important rule to follow, especially if you're in a new area or are new to hiking: don't divert from your planned route. It is quite easy to get lost!

Tell Somebody Where You're Going!

Be sure to tell someone where you are. Next to ensuring your phone is fully charged and you have plenty of water. Telling someone where you are is one of the most important things you can do. If you lose contact, get lost, or have any emergency. Someone knowing where you are means they can contact the appropriate services if you dont arrive home safely & they will also be able to provide your approximate location.

These are the basics of hiking! Alongside all of the above advice remember, you're in nature & therefore should leave no trace. After all, you're there to enjoy it not destroy it.
